Sixes: how to play

Also known as Hollywood, Round Robin, Six-six-six

Three six-hole matches with a new partner each time.

Sixes solves the fourball's oldest problem: who partners whom. The round is split into three six-hole matches, and you partner each of the other three players once: holes 1 to 6 with one, 7 to 12 with the next, 13 to 18 with the last. Each match is better-ball match play, and you collect points for the matches you win.

Because everyone plays with everyone, there is no bad draw and no sulking about partners. Golf Daddy rotates the pairings, scores each six-hole match and keeps the individual points table.

Sixes rules

  1. 1.Three six-hole matches: holes 1-6, 7-12 and 13-18, with a different partner in each.
  2. 2.Each match is better-ball match play: the lower score of each pair counts on every hole.
  3. 3.One point to each player on the side that wins a match; half a point each for a halved match.
  4. 4.Alternatively, score a point per hole won; choose which when you set up the game.
  5. 5.Most points after 18 holes wins. Played over 18 holes only.

How handicaps work

Holes are decided on net scores using each player's handicap strokes, as in Four Ball. Golf Daddy applies the strokes and shows the state of the current six-hole match on the scorecard.

Worked example

You win holes 1-6 with Jo (1 point), halve 7-12 with Sam (half a point) and lose 13-18 with Alex. You finish on 1.5 points.

Tips and variations

  • Per-hole scoring produces more separation; per-match scoring keeps the round closer. Pick what suits the stake.
  • A six-hole match can finish 4&2 after the fourth hole; the remaining holes still count for your handicap round.
  • Sixes pairs well with a Stableford on the side, since everyone plays their own ball.

Sixes FAQs

What is the Hollywood golf format?

Another name for Sixes: a fourball plays three six-hole better-ball matches, changing partners for each so that everyone partners everyone once.

How are points scored in Sixes?

Either a point to each winner of a six-hole match (half for a halve) or a point per hole won. Golf Daddy supports both.

Does Sixes work with nine holes?

No. The format needs three six-hole segments, so it is 18 holes only.
